Like fathers, like sons

They were toddlers when their fathers were recording hit songs in the 1970s, but Abebe Lewis and Taki Miller are aware of the legacies Ian Lewis and Jacob Miller established with The Inner Circle band.

Both men, who are in their early 40s, live in South Florida. Lewis is a marketing executive and part of Inner Circle’s promotions team, while Miller is into events marketing through his Tenement Yard company.

Miller was in the car his father was driving that crashed into a utility pole in Kingston and died at age 27 on March 23, 1980. His brother Andre Jones and Ian Lewis’ step-daughter Latoya Atkins were also in the vehicle, but survived.

While he does not have vivid memories of “Jakes”, Miller told Splash he hears nothing but good about his old man.

“As I get older I’m more appreciative of his work, his personality. Anytime you talk to people that’s what they talk about, his jovial personality,” he said.

Tenement Yard is named for one of the big hit songs Jacob Miller recorded with Inner Circle. At any event it promotes, including Daydreamers and Chilling Out On The Farm, Miller junior insists the sound system present belts out some of his father’s songs.

Miller migrated to the United States while a student at St Catherine High School. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in computer science from Rutgers University, and a Master’s in business from Nova Southeastern University.

Like Taki Miller, Abebe Lewis was born in Kingston. He has lived in Miami since he was six years-old and currently heads Abebe Lewis Marketing and Branding Group.

The company’s clients include Inner Circle and hip-hop group 2 Live Crew. Lewis has also worked as a consultant and booking agent for Nas, Flo Rida, Trick Daddy and Rick Ross.

Being around his father and uncle Roger Lewis, co-founders of Inner Circle, has given him a comprehensive awareness of the music business.

“I appreciate them for what they have done for reggae music and also the business of music. They have staying power, as they continue to reinvent themselves; they have their own private studio (Circle House) and just launched Bigg Zound, their PA and Backline company,” said Lewis.

He grew up listening to tales about Jacob Miller and his five-year stint with Inner Circle. His favourite songs by them are Tenement Yard, Mr Officer and I’ve Got The Handle.
